Glasses 101

Glasses are pretty amazing, if you think about it. First of all, they can make half-blind people (I sadly include myself in this category) see. How cool is that?! We take it for granted most of the time, but it is a pretty fantastic thing. Also, as you can see in the above picture, they can transform a person's face, thus changing how the person is perceived.

Which just goes to show that when you buy glasses, you better be pretty damn sure that they look good on you and send the message you want to send. Remember; many glasses-wearers take their specs off only to sleep. If you are one of these people, keep in mind that the glasses will be a semi-permanent part of your appearance - which means you better like them. They can be hugely expensive, once you add on the cost of the lenses, so it's not like you can trade your pair in for a new one on a whim; unless you're really rich, it's best to buy a pair that you know you will still love years from now.

Yep, it's difficult to buy glasses. It can be hugely overwhelming to stare at racks upon racks of frames, wondering which of the hundreds of pairs will be your miracle pair. Where do you start? What should you try on? How much should you spend?

Not to fear, dearies. I've got your back.

Let's start by discussing my glasses.

Above you will see my glasses in all their glory. The pictures have been hanging around on my computer for ages, hence the intact pixie cut that is no longer. Please note that the scarf-and-hat combo on the left was a joke. No, I did not actually think it looked good.

Anyway, I love my glasses. They are a source of constant compliments, and even though I've been wearing them for years, I'm still not sick of them.

Let's talk about why they work for me:

They flatter my face. I have such a small face and such pale skin that the biggest issue in glasses-hunting was making sure that the frames didn't overpower me. I originally wanted chunky black frames, but some experimenting showed that black was too dark for the skin, and thick frames covered too much of my face. Brown was a much more flattering color for me than black. As for the shape of the glasses. . . well, I'm not going to lie and say that I know exactly why it's flattering for me. All I know is that the relatively small size of the frames helped keep my face the focus, not my glasses.

They are unique. I didn't want something too out-there, but I did want my glasses to be fun and funky. The shape of the glasses is semi-unique, but what I really like about the glasses design is that there is a gap between the lenses and the frames on the sides. I have never seen another pair like this, which I love. The glasses make anything I wear look kind of "alternative" - a plus for me, since I don't like to look like everyone else.

They are versatile. For me, since I planned to wear these every day, I needed glasses that would look good with anything I wear. Because they are a nice, neutral color and not too wild, I can wear them anywhere and everywhere, and they don't restrict my clothing choices in any way.

Alright, so what can you learn from my little glasses bio? I'm hoping that it will give you an idea of how to go about searching for your perfect frames. For example, here's a good way to begin:

♥ Before you hit the stores, think about what you want from your glasses. What styles do you like? Observe people and do some internet research to decide. Do you want to wear your glasses for a long time? If so, it might be safer to look for pairs that are relatively simple, so that you don't have to worry about them going out of style. How much do you want to pay? Give yourself a price limit ahead of time. Write a list of the things that are important to you.

♥ Now it's time to shop! Head to the stores, list in hand, and try on some frames that meet your criteria. Pay attention to what looks good (it may be a good idea to bring a friend for a second opinion.) You may need to make some compromises in the name of flattering your face (in the way that I had to forgo the chunky black frames), or you may decide that you like a style enough that you don't care how it looks on you.

♥ It's best to look through several glasses stores before making a decision. Because each store boasts different stock and different sales people, you may find that your taste has changed over a couple of days of shopping. This happened to me when I bought my first pair of frames; after a few days, I went back to the first store I had gone into, and was shocked to find that a pair I had been lusting after was no longer enticing to me. Go figure! It's safest to give yourself some time.

♥ Think you've found your miracle glasses? Have you given it a few days, and they still give you that shivery "I've-found-the-One" feeling? Buy 'em! Then stare at yourself in the mirror for hours, try your new glasses on with all sorts of different hairstyles, and go out to show off your hot new look! Stylin' glasses are fun - so have fun with them!

Here are some girls looking amazing in glasses, just in case you need inspiration.

Fierce! Big frames, small frames, candy colors, neutral colors, chunky, thin, nerdy, cool - they all look amazing! The lesson? Any style of frames can be super-stylish and pretty, as long as they are right for you!

Don't need the glasses but still crave the look? Forever 21 is currently selling two pairs with clear lenses (1, 2), as is Urban Outfitters (they are called readers but have no magnification.)

Do you wear glasses? What do you think of them?

Bold, Black, & Beautiful

Here's a little trick:

Black doesn't have to be boring. And if you pick carefully, bold black accessories can be a lifesaver. They go with everything, so you can throw them on no matter what else you're wearing. If you're running late and don't have time to pull together a look, add a bold black accessory to your boring ensemble and - tadah! - instant style. Of course, any sort of bold accessory can accomplish this, but black is so easy that I think it is essential for bleary-eyed, running-out-the-door mornings.

Here are some of my (mostly) cheap picks:

My personal black items aren't exactly statement pieces, but they have managed to save my outfit from boring-ness many a time. Quilted 80's bags, chunky-heeled combat boots, crocheted berets, patent ballet flats, studded belts - these are the black accessories that have served me well. My bold black accessory collection is forever growing and changing, and I have relied heavily on it throughout the years.

Do you have staple bold black accessories? What are they?

Thou Shalt Not Covet

Having just finished reading Dante's Inferno, I can safely say that this post will condemn me to the third circle of Hell. At least in Dante's opinion. Yes, I am a glutton when it comes to accessories.

1. Darla Chain Pendant Necklace, $9.99 The Fusion Boutique
I've been into more chunky jewelry lately, and this is both chunky and cheap enough to appeal to me.

2. Black Moto Ankle Boots, $39.99 The Fusion Boutique
Oh, I so want these! I love the stripes of patent leather! I've been wishing for ankle boots, and I like that these are much more unique than most of the ankle boots I've come across. My shoe size is 7.5, hint hint!

3. NOCOLLECTION Suede Fringe Purse, $34.99 La Redoute
Fringe just started appealing to me for the first time since Pocahontas ceased to be my favorite movie. This cute little bag comes in lots of colors to match all your outfits, and studs keep it from looking too much like it belongs in a wigwam. Remember to use the code LRMONDAY today for 20% off your first item and 40% off your third!

4. Green Belted Croc Handbag, $42.00 Lulu's Fashion Lounge
Croc skin, even faux croc, has always seemed hideous to me. But this bag is such a pretty color that I can't help coveting it! Love it.

5. Peacock Feather Earrings, $14.00 Fred Flare
To be honest, I added these earrings to this post because I thought they would look nice with the rest of the accessories. I do like long colorful earring, though. They are totally flattering to my (and anyone's) cheekbones.

6. The Gallery Cocktail Ring, $12.95 Karma Loop
Did you know that when you sign up for the Karma Loop newsletter they email you a $10 gift code? Well they do. I just recieved my gift code, and I think I might be spending it on this ring. My only issue is that I don't know my ring size! Would someone explain to me how to figure it out?

Well, those are my current desired accessories. What have you been coveting lately?

A Revelation on Accessories

Sooo...guess what? I took the night off from working on my novel, and now my fashion blog inspiration is back! I think I'll be alternating from now on to keep both projects going.

Speaking of inspiration, I always take a lot of inspiration from street style blogs - in particular, Facehunter and the Sartorialist. This morning I was browsing through the photos that the street style fairy miraculously posts every night while I'm asleep, and I noticed a common thread between most of the outfits. Most people probably noticed this long ago, but I gasped in shock at the sudden realization that the accessories made the outfit. My favorite photos would have been slightly quirky, but not particularly notable, had it not been for a main, eye-catching accessory. For example:

The parasol is key to this look...it catches the eye, provides contrast against the yellow, and adds a certain "fullness" to the woman's appearance. (photo courtesy of The Sartorialist)

This woman would look amazing even if she had to give up an accessory, but I think that the little veil across her face takes the outfit to an entirely different level of fabulousness. On a side note, I love how she took all these pieces with a sort of "old glamour" and updated them with her edgy hair and things. (Photo courtesy of Facehunter)

The shoes and the shades are both vital components of this look, but I think losing either one of them would detract greatly from the outfit. (Photo courtesy of Facehunter)

It seems I should take a cue from these fashionable ladies and stock up on eye-catching, slightly out-of-the-ordinary accessories to make my outfits really pop.

And there you have it...my revelation for the day. On a somewhat related digression, does any one else wonder about the outrageous outfits that sometimes appear on Facehunter? Like, do these people see a Native American headdress in a store, think "Wow, that'll look amazing," and wear it to their next party, or are they just trying to get attention by wearing something outrageous? Is it a joke? Is it a statement? I can never tell. It makes me want to march off to one of those parties and demand to know the meaning/reason behind peoples' clothing choices. If you are ever at a party like that, please think of me and ask them! And then shoot me an email. My curiosity is at an extremely high level.

Lulu's Fashion Lounge

Lulu's Fashion Lounge is an online boutique of sorts that I have known about for a long time. I have to admit that I was never really all that impressed with the merchandise they had to offer. Well, folks, the tides have changed. I visited the site today for the first time in months, and, lo and behold, there was a fantastic selection of shoes and accessories. I wasn't thrilled with the clothing choices, but the shoes and accessories were dead on, especially the shoes. Not only are most of them extremely cute, but they also have a huge under-$50 section. Can you say score?Still, there were two pairs of shoes that stood out, shoes that unfortunately lie outside of my price range. Look how pretty:

Oh. My. God. I am in love with these boots. They are such a rich, unusual (for boots) blue and I really like the unique touch that the little metal studs add. I'm a size 8US, hint, hint...Pretty please with a cherry on top...

I remember coveting these flats (or maybe very similar ones) at Urban Outfitters. So unique and fun! I love them maybe a little too much.

Anyways, those are the lust-worthy, out-of-budget items of the day. So sadly, I didn't buy them. I did unpocket the cash for a pair of plain red flats (just those junky Mary Janes you can buy in any Chinatown, but I'm a sucker for any shoes with a $6.00 price tag), a cute strawberry printed headband with a bow, and the bag that is shown below. Sweet, isn't it? I think I will be very happy with my purchases, even if those blue boots and white flats aren't among them.

Want Asian Street Fashion?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Well, you're in luck. Asiajam.com sells adorable clothing and accessories imported from Asia. Some of them are too cutesy or puffy for the average American, but others are just right for putting together unique, fun look. The prices aren't bad either.

I like a lot of the items for sale there (Those Hello Kitty purses are so sweet!), but there was one item that really stood out. The skirt pants (shown above) are cute and unique. I've never seen or heard of skirt pants, but I hope they make it big. I may just buy these and bring the trend to America.

New Spring Look: Metallics

That's right...metallics are back in. I've been seeing clothing and accessories with that disco-y, bling-bling effect. I'm not sure if I'm a big fan of metallic tops, bottoms, or dresses, because they seem a bit tacky to me, but I think a nice touch of gold or silver in the accessories department can really brighten or dress up an outfit. Here are some of the items I've seen:

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This Wet Seal top is a bit too disco for me, and it seems tacky.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
This Forever 21 headband, on the other hand, is just the right addition to almost any outfit.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
OK, let me just say I love this Zara bag. It would work with a daytime or a nightime look, and it looks so chic and hip at the same time.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
These Wet Seal shoes have a bit of that disco feel, but I think they would be really fun to wear on a night out.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
These American Apparel leggings would work great for day or night, and I love how they can make any outfit looks effortlessly fun, funky, and fashionable. Don't believe me? Well, look at how great it looks in Mathew Williamson's spring collection.

See? I told you so.

Flickr.com

So I'm really liking flickr.com. I got an acount there a week or so ago, but I didn't really get around to using it until thursday. Believe me, this is so much more than a photo-hosting site. There are so many groups with pools of photos on any subject. Some of them are extremely clever. My faves? Wardrobe Swapshop is a group where people post pics of the old clothing, shoes, and accessories that they no longer want, and if they like the stuff that someone else posted, they can trade one of their items for it. That's right...it's like thrift shopping, except it has the added bonus of cleaning unwanted clothes out of your closet, and oh yeah, it only costs the price of shipping. Yippee! Another awesome group is Wardrobe_Remix, where people post pictures of their daily outfits. I'm always so jealous of how awesome everyone looks. It's a great place for wardrobe inspiration. (I'm clothing-obsessed, can you tell?). Finally, flickr hosts many groups full of photos of delicious-looking food and accompanying recipes. This is great for me, but not so great for cookbook authors. Score!

CUTE bags and shirts and stuff. Kind of like what you'd expect to find at fredflare.com.

My Stores

I am not a cheap person. I don't spend a lot of money, but it's not because I don't want to. I jsut don't have a lot of it. This is kind of unfortunate for someone who loves fashion. I'm not going to waste my time complaining about it, though. I've found some stores that are in my price range and carry some pretty awesome clothes, most of the time. I've also found some online thrift stores, but so far I'm too chicken to buy from them.

Cheap but awesome stores:

  • Wet Seal
  • Forever 21
  • Delia's (sometimes)
  • alloy.com
  • Target

My one splurge:

  • Urban Outfitters

Stores I covet:

  • Free People!
  • Betsy Johnson
