Dreaming of Feathers

There's really only one way to put it - Rheanna Lingham's jewelry is simply magical.

Her "feather your nest" collection is gorgeous - a shimmering, dream catcher-esque batch of wonders that, despite sharing a medium, are of an entirely different breed than those '80s peacock earrings.

Yes, these creations, orginally available at Pixie Market, have sold out in a flash. I'm hardly surprised.

Says Rheanna, "My recent work is based on the 19th century fashion for using dead birds to ornament clothing. Through my work I have questioned why women wore dead birds, and how these morbid and perhaps barbaric fashions have instilled a beauty and exoticism that has caused cush objects to remain desirable, despite being condemned by the majority."

Of course, she makes non-feathery jewelry, but these are my favorites.

"The jewelry is rooted in historical fashions, it appears both glamorous and decadent, but with an underlying notion of horror or decay. Inspirations are varied, ranging from derelict Georgian houses to pigeon rings, from mourning jewelry to Indian Maharajahs and 19th century fashion to farm equipment." - Luna and Curious

So her inspiration may not have been dream catchers after all, even though my brain jumps to that conclusion at the first sight of these works of art. But still, one must admit, they are the stuff of dreams.

New Purchases Make Me Happy

I made a few purchases today that I'm supremely happy with.

First there's this Jovovich-Hawk for Target top I picked up today:

I like the draping and Grecian style, and the fact that it's soft and loose. I was a little disappointed because the two pieces in the collection I was most excited to see in person and possibly buy were the linen vest and that absolutely adorable linen bag, and they weren't in the store.

Oh well. I'll have to try again some other time. The sizing and quality of the line is too variable for me to risk buying online.

My other purchase is the necklace I'm wearing in the above picture. Here it is close up:

I bought it for $20.00 from a younger girl in my neighborhood this morning. She and her friends make this amazing jewelry (in lots of color combinations), and they held a crafts fair today. They are donating half of the proceeds to a school in Sudan, and the other half goes toward their supplies. I asked my neighbor if she would be interested in selling to you guys through my blog, since I think the jewelry is so pretty and the cause is so good. She hasn't decided yet, but we shall see... Anyone interested?

I love my necklace, though! I know I said I hated chokers, but apparently I don't. So Wendy, you can stop being shocked and disturbed by my aversion to chokers now.

Yay- I love buying new things!

Chokers

When I recently read that chokers were coming back in, I was kind of upset. There are lots of beautiful chokers, and I used to love them as a kid, but I can't help but feel like they sort of chop up your neck and make it look shorter, you know? Also, they are a bit too tight for comfort.

I really don't like chokers.

However, this picture from the most recent Free People catalogue has almost changed my mind:

The shirt feels a little too hippie, but the combination of the choker and longer necklace is quite beautiful.

Okay, so I'm still not the hugest fan of chokers. But if someone gave me both these necklaces (hint, hint), I would wear them. There's no doubt about that.

(Now that I think of it, is this necklace too long to be considered a choker? I'm not sure. I hope not, because that would ruin the whole point of this post.)
